WHERE'S WALLY? BUSKING THE STREETS OF REYKJAVIK

10/2/2012

If you’re ever in Iceland, be sure to allow some time to simply roam the streets of Reykjavik, the world’s northernmost capital city.

Yes, go see Iceland's fjords; they’re beautiful beyond imagination.  Be sure to take a dip in the Blue Lagoon; its geothermal waters are as magical as they are mysterious.  And by all means, don’t miss Iceland’s waterfalls; they’re simply spectacular.

But if you pass up Reykjavik’s historic district you’ll miss the heart of this island nation; you’ll miss her colorful culture, from the brightly painted shops that line the narrow, distinctively

European streets to the artsy flare with which Icelanders do everything, including advertising;

and you’ll certainly miss the energy and night life that spills out onto her otherwise quaint, quiet streets.

delectable Icelandic cuisine when we took to the streets our last night in Iceland, reluctant to say goodbye to this marvelous harbor city.

We’d walked one block when we (Jimmy, me, my sister Lynda and her husband Rodney) stumbled onto Wally the busker directing traffic, the pedestrian kind, as he prepared to launch into his unique brand of street art.   It was the perfect complement to our evening meal, a sweet ending in fact to a week’s worth of fine dining this past June courtesy of Iceland.

HEY YOU! Don't move! Stay where you are.
Wally started drawing a crowd, which required some fancy footwork

Raise your hands if you're sure Wally can deliver. Lynda and Jimmy are sure.
Wally moved to jam mode with the help of two hefty males and one lovely lady.

Wally will walk (or ride) over anybody to climb up the ladder of success.
There was no turning back as this Aussie began working his magic.
Picture
Hats off to Wally the busker.
He went to new heights to keep us entertained.

It's a bird, it's a plane. No, it's Wally!
With nowhere else to go at the top of his game, he turned to juggling his hat, a chicken and a plunger (three balls would have been much too easy).
Picture
Some days are worse than others when it comes to juggling it all.
He upped the ante yet again as one man at a time released the ladder they’d been holding for the last ten minutes.

No room for hitch hikers where Wally is going.
Wally was on his own, balancing 8 feet above the ground with only his wits and a crowd of spellbound onlookers to keep him aloft.
Picture
I'd have to agree, life is so often a balancing act.
We were ripe for the picking by the time Wally launched into his 'hat line' from his lofty vantage point high above the crowd.  He suggested a euro if onlookers felt his time was worth a bottle of water; 3 euros if his time was worth a coke; 5 euros if he was beer worthy.  We each considered our thirst for entertainment as we dug into our pockets.
Picture
Let's hear it for Wally!
The hat went round,  the bills started flying as the fun and our night came to an end.  The memories though will go on and on.  They're priceless!

Regardless the currency, Wally was happy to take our money. It was a fair exchange.
