STAYING CONNECTED, ONE SELFIE AT A TIME

7/30/2014

I’m living proof you can teach an old dog new tricks!  I took my first official selfie (there were a few self portraits over the years, long, long, ago, in a far away galaxy) two years ago, a staple in the world of travel blogs; says yours truly.

Do you remember your very first selfie?
It was a pivotal moment.  Never mind the earliest usage of the term selfie can be traced as far back as 2002.  The term was defined in UrbanDictionary.com in 2005. I’m always slightly (okay, massively) behind the curve.

There was a time when I thought the entire social phenomenon a bit self-absorbed, the purview of teens and techies willing to jeopardize real communication for a frivolous social connection. That was before . . .

. .  I retired and morphed into the next version of me – world traveler, blogging and having the time of my life.

Selfie #2; perfecting our technique.

Lost count, put we're obviously still novices.
Traveling here, there, and everywhere,
with friends,
with family,
and of course, with my beloved Jimmy,
it became abundantly clear selfies were the way to go; there’s much more to travel than the destination.  Selfies are all about the journey inside!

I confess, some selfies have me wondering if I’m past my photographic prime. In all honesty, I think I passed that old clunker a few miles back;

Picture
which is to say, I have yet to find a good side now that my body is bulging, my hair is thinning, and my face is sagging (and what’s with those batwings growing under my arms?).  Alas, joy, spontaneity, fun - they always show well.

If all else fails, I can rest assured that in another twenty years, God willing, the passage of time will suddenly coalesce into what’s called wisdom, character, grace, via old, old age; then I’ll be picture perfect for my very last trip.

Ironically, given all the selfies of late (all these years, I've basically been the one behind the camera), I wonder if that old, old woman will look back with as much tenderness on the woman in those selfies as I do now, seeing me as the world saw me years ago. I know that old woman will look back and think, damn, I looked pretty good twenty years ago, all things considered!
So, for the time being, I’ll simply have to suffer through that awkward in between stage – too old to be really young, too young to be really old.  Adolescence wasn’t pretty, either.

Besides, I think you'd grow bored with my ramblings if I remained a shadowy figure behind all the stunning destinations; and, yes, a few travel tips, insights, and observations.

The world is truly a beautiful place I love sharing with you.  But all that travel means very little without a connection.  It's still important I pop in from time to time;

Gotten a lot of mileage out of this image, huh, Diane?

and connect with my audience.  That would be you! Here’s looking at you, sweetheart!

And here’s to you sharing your selfie, too; perhaps via my blog’s Facebook page.  A comment will do, though, if you haven't yet mastered the art of selfies.  Either way, let’s stay connected.

Good to stay connected. Of course, I already have a picture of you, dear friend!

I appreciate being included in your selfies! Need to work on doing our own.
