HAPPY HOUR AT RENO'S MIDTOWN RAPSCALLION

7/9/2014

I’m so glad we eat three meals a day!  It’s been our saving grace for the last week, our only real excuse for a break (we did manage an afternoon or two away for sanity's sake), deep in the throes of a kitchen remodel.

Down to the bare bones before the rebuilding can begin.
No, not our kitchen; Steve’s kitchen, as in Jim’s son, in Reno, Nevada (remember, this is a travel blog).  Yes, Steve’s new place is a cute little fixer upper, long on fixin’s, short on space (625 square feet, including the kitchen), as in perfect bachelor pad in Midtown Reno where things are happenin’, particularly when it comes to food (and spirits) in “The Biggest Little City in the World.”

Based on our week of dining out Reno style, I’m not sure remodeling Steve’s kitchen was such a good idea; too much good food, literally steps away from his front door, to consider dining in, especially when cooking for one.

Five of us made it for Happy Hour at Rapscallion, just blocks away (1555 S. Wells Avenue) from Steve’s new home; Jimmy and me, Steve, Steve’s sister Rachel, and her husband Brian.  It didn't take long to discover why, year after year, this establishment has been voted the "best" seafood restaurant in Northern Nevada.

The bar was oozing charm and old money, a polished man cave covered in rich, dark wood and highlighted with a touch of brass and stained glass for good measure. Fortunately Brian (already getting his happy on) had secured a table in the bar, where Happy Hour prices (and the crowds) prevail from 3 to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Doesn't get much better than this, huh Brian?
We took Brian’s advice when it came to ordering appetizers given the plethora of options on the Happy Hour menu.

Steve brought his appetite!
As Reno residents for the past three years, Brian and Rachel know their way around town, as well as a glass or two of cold hops.  Rapscallion is one of their favorite restaurants.

Every hour shared is Happy Hour for these two newlyweds.
After a toast to Steve’s new kitchen (and a silent prayer Jimmy and I would survive our week-long remodeling ordeal),

This took the edge off ten hours of hard labor.
our fresh and artfully prepared appetizers arrived:  Baja Fish Tacos (rivaled those we had in Maui two years earlier; the fish was fried, very crispy, included a fresh avocado cream to accompany the tomatoes and tangy coleslaw);

Four orders of Baja Tacos put a small dent in our big appetites.
Classic Buffalo Wings (buttery rather than greasy with just the right amount of heat); Spicy Cheesy Seafood Bites (the insides of these crispy, fried favorites that disappeared so fast tasted like spicy crab meat);

Next time, I'm not sharing the wings or the seafood bites!
and Baked Goat Cheese (this has been a favorite of Rachel’s for years).

The rosemary garlic tomato sauce was the perfect accompaniment for the goat cheese.
Good food and a good time shared with family; doesn’t get much better than that, unless of course we’re talking a long soak in a hot, bubbly bath (all by my lonesome, that is) to soothe all the aches and pains.

What? You were expecting/worried-there-might-be a bathtub shot! Yeah, right!!!!!

I think I will go visit Stephen when all the work is completed. But we will be eating out for sure!
As for a bathtub shot... NO WAY!

The work is all done; at least the really tough stuff.
