FUN FOTO FRIDAY:  OUTTAKES FOR THE WEEK 8/11/14

8/15/2014

I have a new twist on my usual Fun Foto Friday, given the highlight of my week has come on the heels of the latest craze to hit social media: the “ice bucket challenge.”
??????????
For those social media phobics (or people too busy for such nonsense), it’s really quite simple.  To help raise awareness about amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Lou Gehrig’s Disease, and encourage contributions to fund research in battling this incurable disease, the first recorded ice bucket challenge (donate $10 to the ALS charity of your choice and pour a bucket of ice water over your head OR skip the ice bucket piece altogether and donate $100) was accepted by Jeanette Hane Senerchia  of Pelham, NY on July 16, 2014.  She received her challenge from Ariana Kennedy via Facebook.  The two set out to raise awareness for ALS on behalf of Anthony Senerchia Jr., who has ALS.

When former Boston College baseball player Pete Frates, who has ALS, began posting about the challenge on Twitter, the craze took off (his former teammates were a big part of the craze factor as they rallied for Pete, who can no longer speak, walk, or move his arms) along with ALS donations that are a record three times higher than the same period last year.   I watched Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon accept the challenge - good friend Justin Timberlake, Mayor Chris Christie and New York Jets owner Woody Johnson all challenged Fallon - on the Tonight Show the same day my Jimmy was called out by his son Steve.

Fallon passed the challenge on to the NY Jets after an on air ice bucket deluge that included Fallon’s side kick Steve Higgins, Fallon’s entire band, The Roots, Tonight Show guest Rob Riggle and Horatio Sanz, who just happened to be around to immediately accept Rob Riggle’s challenge as Rob passed the bucket.  You can see all thirteen heroes getting wet and wild in this memorable moment courtesy of the YouTube video below.

You can see Jimmy’s memorable moment in this second YouTube video below.  He looks pretty lonely after Fallon's baker's dozen.  But I'm proud of him.  I get a chuckle every time I watch the video.  Hope you do, too.

The phenomenon is definitely sweeping the country at this point. What is really cool is how much money has been raised for research. I hope they find a cure for ALS.
