I knew it!
I was the worst as a kid when it came to that pink, sugary, sticky, juicy concoction called bubble gum! I have the fillings on top of cavities to prove it. I was also the best when it came to bubble gum. I could blow away the competition with the biggest bubbles known to mankind, and my two sisters. I blew their minds with bubbles inside bubbles.
And then there was all that pink cotton candy. I’d watch the stuff magically appear inside Merlin’s (a.k.a. 16-year-old carnival worker) silver cauldron. I felt like a princess as I watched Merlin wave his magic wand, collect the fairy dust, and then present me that pink poof of sugary heaven.
Needless to say, I didn’t have a Red-Velvet-Cupcake-smothered-in-cream-cheese-frosting’s chance in hell of passing up the pink storefront oozing with the promise of sugary delights.
I could no more fight the science of color than I could the years of Pavlovian conditioning; nor did I want to.
In my humble opinion though, Judy Owens should get most of the credit.
And she bakes! Beautifully and tastefully, I might add.
And look at the pink tee shirt she has her cashier wearing.
And as luck would have it, each of today’s cupcakes was selling for 50 cents less than the usual price of $2.50. Sweet . . . as in hand-held desserts!
Why buy the whole cake (which I’d then have to force myself to eat; I hate to waste food) for that single slice of decadence when a cupcake (usually half the calories of a piece of cake) will
There were dozens of cupcakes to choose from, wonderful options like Key Lime Delight, Mint Chip, Salted Caramel, Butter Pecan, Tiramisu and Chocolate Madness. Could I walk out with just one? Think of the savings if I bought two? I could buy a new wardrobe, which I’d need, if I walked away with several dozen. I popped a piece of sugar-free bubble gum and perused the display of hand-held desserts.
Judy is not only the master of sweet when it comes to cupcakes; she’s the queen of savvy when it comes to marketing. I liked this girl, even before I'd had a chance to try her cupcakes. She even offers seasonal favorites. But did she offer my favorite, Red Velvet with cream cheese frosting?
Dumb question! My blood sugar was obviously running dangerously low. As I mentioned earlier, this was one smart cupcake!
There it was, top shelf, oozing creamy decadence on top of the promise of a rich, dense, moist cake!
Jim and Joan and Jerry made their selections next, as well as the decision to save our purchases for later that evening.
Bummer! I was pink slipped!
I am so much a ‘savor-the-moment’ kind of gal, especially when it comes to cupcakes. I had to wait another three hours before savoring my purchase.
I am convinced I’ll head straight back to that little pink gingerbread-of-a-house shop next time I make it to Mt. Dora. And I’m going to eat my delightful and delectably divine Red Velvet Cupcake with cream cheese frosting, right there in Judy’s sunny little shop.
And then I’ll take at least one more to go; maybe two if it’s a Thursday.
The Bottom Line on Cupcake Delights
Verdict: Yum, yum, yum! To quote Judy, she has cupcakes “for every occasion, and just for fun.” What fun!
Check out the testimonials on Judy’s website (lots of pink again!) if you need convincing. People flock from all over Florida (Orlando, Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, Hollywood) and beyond for her scrumptious and cleverly designed cupcakes.

Insider Information: As I mentioned earlier, if you’re 55 or better, you get a break on the price of cupcakes on Thursdays (they were reduced by 50 cents the day we were there). Each
day’s lineup of cupcake options are posted on Judy’s Facebook page, should you have specific needs beyond the six signature cupcakes she offers every day: Carrot Cake, Classic Buttercream, Chocolate Buttercream, Coconut Dream, Cream Cheese, and my favorite, Red Velvet.
