CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF WONDER

3/5/2014

It doesn’t matter where I’m headed or why; put me in a window seat, and as those first few critical moments of flight unfold and the plane climbs to twenty-thousand feet, I inevitably experience a wave of existential thought and pure wonder as lofty as the clouds that fill the heavens.
Picture
Yes, I typically have my head in the clouds, even sans flight.
“Man must rise above the Earth – to the top of the atmosphere and beyond – for only thus will he fully understand the world in which he lives.”

You nailed that one, Socrates!

I’m certainly no philosopher (and I’m lousy with a hammer), but wrapped in my cramped, capricious cocoon with a fresh window on my world, I am always amazed at the ordinary now rendered so extraordinary.

My heart now knows what my head seemed unable to divine as a mere mortal firmly planted on the ground.  How small my world, how vast and beautiful this planet Earth.
Picture
I see vast oceans of time in 3D as mountainous millennium ripple with the mysteries of life here on earth.  So many mysteries, so few answers. What is the meaning of life? Why here? Why now? Are we alone?
Picture
Gee, looks like a close-up of my thighs.
It’s a beautiful, chaotic, amazing planet I see from above,
Picture
Dozens of glittering crop circles somewhere in Nebraska; maybe Iowa.
a tiny speck of microscopic wonder teeming with life in a sea of galaxies.

Wow, my last flight was out of this world. Okay, maybe NASA should get some credit.
Am I truly star dust, the residue of all creation?  I feel vulnerable and yet worldly, wise and magnanimous up here among the gods.

Above the din of humanity, I suddenly feel suspended in time; hardly an impossibility given the seemingly impossible, gravity-defying feat responsible for hefting a thousand-ton mass of metal and machination into the sky.

Looking down on planet Earth from my lofty perch, I now know in my head and my heart I am truly blessed to be part of all the mystery and the magic.

Sometimes ours is not to question why, but simply to believe.

Nice. (Just have to comment so you know I'm reading your blog.) Spent the day in Mt.Dora with 5 classmates (plus spouses) who met 67 years ago in kindergarten! Great time.

What fun! All I remember about kindergarten was nap time. Names and faces are a blur. I envy your depth in friends. Wish we'd met much earlier.

I'm lucky to have the kindergarten class photograph!!! After asking others, there are only a couple names we can't remember because they moved away.
