ENJOY GLORY DAYS AT PEG'S GLORIFIED EGGS & HAM

1/22/2014

I try not to shop for groceries on an empty stomach, otherwise it’s like shopping with three kids in tow; all kinds of food I don’t need ends up in my cart.

Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

If you read today’s post on an empty stomach, I guarantee you’ll consume all kinds of food, most likely of the breakfast variety.  We consumed our fair share at Peg’s Glorified Ham ‘n Eggs, voted “Best Breakfast” for 11 years running by satisfied customers in northern Nevada (Reno and Sparks), and now, Roseville, California.

I’m from Chicago, but I’m here to cast my vote, too.  The food was glorious, all glorified as it was for the hungry patrons packing it in the morning we were there!

DELL RHEA CHICKEN BASKET:  A TASTE OF NOSTALGIA

11/25/2013

We were kids again, the four of us, making the night ours on a Saturday when we walked into the Dell Rhea Chicken Basket on the old U.S. Route 66.
The night was young, much younger than our collective 271 years.  Yowza!
Picture
We're actually walking out in this picture, but you get the idea.

FALL OFFERS EASY PICKINGS FOR GOOD FOOD & FUN

10/28/2013

Picture
Fall's version of the Big Apple.
I’ve been banking quite heavily lately on the apple-a-day-keeps-the-doctor away philosophy; which is probably why I felt compelled several weeks ago to pick a bushel of apples at a local orchard. You know the saying: a bird/apple in the hand is worth two in the bushel.  Whatever!

It was one of those beautiful crisp fall days flaunting so much color and charisma (not to mention a plethora of produce) that a good time outdoors proved easy pickings.

WHAT'S A VISIT TO PHILADELPHIA WITHOUT CHEESE STEAK

10/9/2013

Two months ago, I had no idea this would actually be my very last officially sanctioned Philly cheese steak. Nonetheless, my taste buds went into a delicious full bloom!

Buns of steak we got for a steal. Soooooo good!

TIME STANDS STILL AT IRELAND'S RATHBAUN FARM

8/19/2013

Picture
It's still hard to believe the 2 feet of authentic thatching keeps this cottage dry.
It was one of those places that whispered of long ago, when life was simple, as in rural, where man lived and died on a patch of land he worked for a lifetime.  This particular patch of land was as much a part of the family as the generations that had been born and raised in the two-hundred-year-old thatched white cottage at the center of the Connelly family farm.

CHICAGO'S HISTORIC BERGHOFF RESTAURANT SERVES HISTORY & HEARTY GERMAN FOOD

6/25/2013

The ingredients seemed clear enough; apples and strudels.  No problems there. I didn’t give this popular Viennese pastry a second thought when I ordered dessert.  I was three or four bites into bliss before I detected a crunch that spelled trouble.   Within minutes my entire body was sounding the alarm.

CINDERELLA + MODEL A FORD + SERENDIPITY = MAGIC

6/17/2013

We had till sundown, not midnight, until our coach would turn into a pumpkin; and while our

I cheated a little and used a photo from months earlier that shows off our coach properly.
Cinderella days were obviously long gone, there was no denying serendipity had been more than willing to pick up  where our fairy-godmother had left off.   We had a ball!

THE MOZART EFFECT, COSI BOWLS & A DELICIOUS LIFE

5/8/2013

It’s a shame that when I was born a preemie years and years and years ago, there was no Mozart Effect, no piano concerto or symphony or opera with those magical 60 beats per minute piped into my incubator to encourage rapid weight gain.  It took me four long and lonely days (that explains my issues) to reach the magical five pound benchmark that would earn me my get-out-of-jail-free card.   Birth had simply been a teaser.

Who knows; had things been different, I might have been the next musical child prodigy with Mozart’s early influence (I did get to see Mozart's Vienna apartment during our European River Cruise last fall); I might have written over 600 pieces of music in my lifetime; at the very least, I might have opened a restaurant and called it Cosi, after Mozart’s opera Cosi fan tutte and become an overnight success.

Oh, wait!  Somebody beat me to the punch.

Actually, they don’t serve punch at Cosi.  They’re more into espressos, lattes, teas, soups, sandwiches, salads and my personal favorite, the Cosi Bowl.

MANNY'S DELI OFFERS CHICAGO'S FINEST CORN BEEF

4/25/2013

Food is my go to destination at least three times a day; more when I’m stressed, and if you’re one of the handful of loyal blog fans (thank you, thank you, thank you), you know all about  the stress in my life of late.

I did get those donuts I mentioned last week, the ones earmarked for relieving the stress.  The two chocolate glazed donuts that had my name on it were part of the dozen I brought home early Saturday morning to show my appreciation for the guys that showed up to spend the bulk of their day demolishing my flooded basement down to the studs.

Alas, the sugar was a temporary fix.  It always is. Sometimes I think I should just fast forward the ingestion process and simply slather the confection all over my hips and derriere where it always ends up anyway. But I always come to my senses.  Who in their right mind would want to skip the sweetest part of this deliciously artful combination of flour, eggs, yeast, milk, shortening and chocolate to go straight to the less-than-desirable repercussions? Duh!

YARD HOUSE EATERY/BREWERY, DENVER, COLORADO

3/28/2013

Restaurants are some of the best places for watching people.  Of course, they’re great places for dining too, but people-watching doesn’t cost me the calories or money that comes with eating out.

My favorite restaurant spot for people watching is a table or booth adjacent to a window.  It’s like a two-for-one sale – watching the people inside the restaurant (the place was packed with more than the usual viewing options!) while observing the people just beyond the window (plenty passing by on their way here and there).  I can’t pass up that kind of a special.

Like mother, like daughter.
Picture
Laura takes her people watching very seriously, just like her mother.
