I could see it. There was certainly something whimsically enchanting about Romania’s medieval city of Brasov. Dusk did wonders for adding just the right touch of magic.
Brasov had it all, the magic, the history, the culture, the ambiance. The oldest traces of human activity in the area date back to 9500 BCE.
Holy Holocene! That’s a hunk of history.
Pivotal characters in Brasov’s early history include Hungary’s King Andrew II, a handful of Teutonic Knights, and tens of thousands of Saxon settlers (Germans), all of whom stepped up in 1211 to move civilization in Burzenland (Romania’s Transylvania region today) out of the Dark Ages.
Voila! The ancient Dacian site in central Romania became the foundation for today’s Brasov. Well, it wasn't all that easy, what with the Turks' and Mongols' propensity for invading eastern Europe, but that's another post altogether. As usual, when it comes to real estate, it was all about location, location, location.
Kronstadt, the medieval city that evolved into today’s historical attraction was strategically located at the intersection of trade routes linking the Ottoman Empire and Western Europe. The goods flowed, the merchants prospered, and the politicians did what they’ve always done – proclaim, promise, and posture their way to power.
Aha! So that’s what the crowned tree that was so prominent throughout Old Town was all about!
