3 + one + 6 = VINTAGE TAOS

8/5/2015

I loved the retro vibe.
Given my current dismal diet (something between Paleo and pitiful), I think a few posts devoted to nothing but food might curb my cravings.  At the very least, I could drool over the pictures (salivary glands are so Pavlovian when it comes to memories) and reminisce when life was a bowl of cherries – or red velvet cupcakes if I’m really going to own this daydream.

Actually, more recently life was a Build-A-Bowl of posole in a cozy little café in Taos, New Mexico.   Would you believe the retro restaurant used to be . . .

Jimmy and I were both pumped at the prospect of filling up at this gas station.
. . . a vintage gas station?  The numbers 3 one 6 reference the actual address for the station back in the day, 316 Paseo del Pueblo Sur.  How cute is that?

Check it out - gas is 32 cents per gallon.
The family-run restaurant (we didn’t get to meet Orlando and Yvette Ortega; they were too busy doing their thing behind the scenes, but our server really made us feel at home) was offering high octane, quintessential Mexican food, as in chile rellenos, quesadillas, los colores, frito pies, taco salads, enchiladas,  . . . .  Well, you get the yummy picture.   But just in case you’re visually challenged, here’s a shot of my sumptuous New Mexican Posole.

I was bowled over with this scrumptious entree.
I managed to make a dent in my Build-A-Bowl, but this was really one of those entrées that just seemed to continue to grow of its own accord with every spicy-savory-crunchy spoonful.   Are you drooling yet?

The café’s eclectic menu included burgers, ribs, tacos, fish, steak, salads, sandwiches and appetizers, as well as 15 beers on draft, vino margaritas, wine and sangria.
Jimmy went with his luncheon favorite, the Righteous Reuben, with some yummy coleslaw that was to die for – both sweet and tangy and light on the mayo.

Best coleslaw ever!! I didn't sample the Reuben.
We were light on time, which meant dessert was out of the question.

Had I known my dismal food future, I certainly would have made more time for the sweeter things in life!

Fortunately, God willing, there is plenty more travel with my sweetie!

Yes, I guess it would given your husband took the photo. BTW, he did a very nice job. Please share my thanks.
